Keck Measurement of the Xte J2123–058 Radial Velocity Curve

چکیده
We measured the radial velocity curve of the companion of the neutron star X-ray transient XTE J2123–058. Its semi-amplitude (K2) of 298.5±6.9 km s−1 is the highest value that has been measured for any neutron star LMXB. The high value for K2 is, in part, due to the high binary inclination of the system but may also indicate a high neutron star mass. The mass function ( f2) of 0.684± 0.047M⊙, along with our constraints on the companion’s spectral type (K5V-K9V) and previous constraints on the inclination, gives a likely range of neutron star masses from 1.2 to 1.8M⊙. We also derive a source distance of 8.5±2.5 kpc, indicating that XTE J2123–058 is unusually far, 5.0±1.5 kpc, from the Galactic plane. Our measurement of the systemic radial velocity is −94.5±5.5 km s−1, which is significantly different from what would be observed if this object corotates with the disk of the Galaxy. VLT spectroscopy of XTE J2123-058 during quiescence: the masses of the two components
We present VLT low resolution spectroscopy of the neutron star X-ray transient XTE J2123-058 during its quiescent state. Our data reveal the presence of a K7V companion which contributes 77 % to the total flux at λ6300 and orbits the neutron star at K2 = 287 ± 12 km s . Contrary to other soft X-ray transients (SXTs), the Hα emission is almost exactly in antiphase with the velocity curve of the ...

متن کاملThe Low Quiescent X-ray Luminosity of the Neutron Star Transient Xte J2123–058
We report on the first X-ray observations of the neutron star soft X-ray transient (SXT) XTE J2123–058 in quiescence, made by the Chandra X-ray Observatory and BeppoSAX, as well as contemporaneous optical observations. In 2002, the Chandra spectrum of XTE J2123–058 is consistent with a power-law model, or the combination of a blackbody plus a power-law, but it is not well-described by a pure bl...
متن کاملA re-analysis of the optical light curves of XTE J2123–058: the mass of the binary components and the outburst mechanism
We have re-analysed the optical light curves of the soft X-ray transient XTE J2123–058 taken during its outburst and decay in 1998. We use a robust algorithm (“differential evolution”) to fit the data using an up-to-date model which computes the light arising from a Roche-lobe filling star and flared accretion disc irradiated by X-rays, and calculates the effects of shadowing and mutual star/di...
متن کامل99 Discovery of twin kHz quasi - periodic oscillations in the high galactic latitude X - ray transient XTE J 2123 – 058
We report the discovery of twin kHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the persistent X-ray flux of the new X-ray transient XTE J2123–058. We detected the QPOs in data taken with the proportional counter array on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer on 1998 July 14, when the source count rate was at about 50% of its outburst peak level. The frequencies of the QPOs were 853±4 and 1129±8 Hz. ...
